Here is an example of an acoustic system designed for autonomous operation, measuring ocean wave spectra. This instrument uses multiple receivers and a single "illumination" source.
The acoustic system shown above uses a combination of sidescan sonars and multiple frequency upward looking sonars to "look at" bubble clouds and waves at the sea surface. SH Scientific Systems Ltd. was involved in the design, construction and deployment of instruments similar to this for long term (up to four months) observation of ocean waves and sea surface interactions in the Western Equatorial Pacific and in the Gulf Stream.
