Valve Actuator using Nitinol
Home Up COAMS Simulator Valve Actuator using Nitinol Acoustic Instruments Inspection system integration

One of the later prototypes of the Nitinol activated valve.

In this project, SH Scientific Systems was part of a team of researchers and technicians developing a novel method of controlled opening and closing of a valve using Nitinol, a "shape memory" alloy.  The project resulted in the granting of two US patents (6,247,678 and 6,464,200).

Involvement of SH Scientific Systems (SHSS)

bulletSHSS carried out the basic research for the project, quantifying the performance of Nitinol for the planned application, and collecting the basic data necessary to develop control algorithms.
bulletSHSS carried out the calculations and theoretical design for several of the mechanical configurations used in prototypes.
bulletSHSS developed the software and user interface for controlling the valve aperture.
bulletSHSS developed and tested a high-level user interface for valve control that was used in demonstrations of the new technology by the client.
